The Lumineers shared their cover of Tom Petty’s “Walls” last week, on the anniversary of his passing.
The Lumineers had the chance to open for Tom Petty three times, including Petty’s final Vancouver performance in 2017. The band said, as special as those times were, it was playing “Walls” for him at a gala that resonated. The band played the song for Tom Petty at the MusiCares Person of the Year Gala where he was being honoured.
“After we played,” Wesley Schultz remembers, “Petty told me how much he liked and appreciated the version, which was a great honor. This is our way of paying homage to him.”
The song also holds special meaning for Schultz. “Tom Petty is a musical hero of mine, and ‘Walls’ is such an incredible song. When I got married, my wife walked down the aisle to the song.”
ALL Proceeds form the song will go to MusiCares.
.@tompetty is a musical hero to us. We were lucky enough to tour with him, and this song #Walls is the song Wes’ wife walked down the aisle to. We recorded our version after Tom died, and the proceeds will go to @MusiCares. https://t.co/qnVFQ2uMkw pic.twitter.com/rOL2dWbdJA
